The Canteen: Their Breakfasts

If you are of a certain age, you probably remember the previous incarnation of The Canteen. Located further off the same building, The previous Canteen was more enclosed, more chic and served fusion fare. The beginning of this century was marked by sudden and unjustified invasion of fusion food remember? My gang of girls used to have our birthdays bashes at The previous Canteen.

Jean-Philippe Darcis: Pretty in Pink

We had some time before dinner after a visit to the Arts Science Museum and dropped by Darcis.  It's still school hols and we were expecting some student crowd but the place was pretty empty. Both museum and Darcis actually. Myfoodsirens suggested that I should try the macarons rather than the other desserts. Jean-Philippe Darcis is famous for their chocolate-based macarons but sadly they were not available. So we ended up with the raspberry tart and a chocolate drink as a compromise.

Vanilla Choux (Adapted from Christelle Le Ru)

Le Ru is a French expatriate living in NZ. Not long ago good friend Fangie gave me a copy of Le Ru's Simply Irresistible French Desserts. A baking noob am I did manage to whip up her lemon tart but failed miserably in her chocolate-based cakes. Thus, these vanilla choux came up as a pleasant surprise. I did not even think about taking photos of it till the very end!

I used Le Ru's petits choux au chocolat's recipe on page 94 to make the choux pastry. Halved everything since I was not confident at all.

Hong Kong!

Never fails to please me.

Curry Debal AKA Devil's Curry

Not too long ago, we had a bbq and ended up with much leftovers. There is always rempah on hand so what better way to deal with the extra meat than to make curry debal.  The upcycling of edibles has always been MY fave form of environmental activity anyway! We do not have a recipe due to the spirit of this dish. So what I am doing here is just to document some procedures for us to play around with. So have fun!

Shimbashi Soba: Simplicity At Its Best

Last week was a too-much-oily-chinese-food week. What better way to detox than some really yummy soba?  I always read the info lovingly prepared by Shimbashi while I wait for my soba.  It is nice to remind myself that rutin is a powerful anti-oxidant and buckwheat protein prevents fat accumulation. Both are present in large quantities in soba. Moreover, Paragon is my turf. Yup, I am forever hanging around Orchard these days :D While it is fun to seek out new dining places it is always comforting to dine in peace at a familiar place with a familiar menu. Nothing will go wrong.

A Naughty Rum Fruit Cake

How naughty you want it to be depends on how much rum you douse the dried fruit with.
